Basic Troubleshooting For PC Internet Problems (Wifi)

Internet is starting to be a necessity. Wouldn’t you agree? Some people’s living rely on the internet. Many people have invested time on the internet and it’s such a pain when problems occur. Specially if you’re not that tech savvy and your only business on the internet are your online funds and all that stuff related.

Well, here are some tips and tricks I’ve gathered for basic troubleshooting network or internet problems on a PC (I’m not a MAC user, but I will be soon . These tips are guaranteed to save you some time and effort in the near future, in case you get problems with the internet.

What’s the first thing to do when you get disconnected from the internet while using free wifi at Starbucks? (Yeah Starbucks has free wifi, in some parts of the world, but we’re just using Starbucks as the wifi name or network here. I’m not, unfortunately, related to them)

1. Yell at the waiter. Or try the following, first:

• If you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista, always go down to the Wifi icon on the bottom right of your screen. The one that looks like green bars, that indicates signal. If it’s XP, it looks like the one that looks like a wireless tower.
• Right click it and choose troubleshoot problems (or “Repair” for WinXp). Windows Troubleshooter, is sometimes, smarter than we are. Let it finish the repair.
• If it says something like “Investigate router or broadband issues…”, then it most probably has something to do with Starbucks’ wifi. Well, you can, if you can, go ahead and yell at the poor waiter.
• If it talks about your adapter, or problems with your adapter, then you better follow its instructions. Windows will just lead you to the best fix a computer could possibly comprehend. Or call a tech guy.
• If, however, after troubleshooting problems, windows tells you that there was no problem found, try another public website such as but not limited to: cnn.com, aol.com, abigailabanilla.com. It could just be the particular site you were trying to open. But if all the other websites don’t open and windows is acting dumb not giving you any solutions, then proceed to step 2.

2. Panic. Or try the following, first:

• Open C Prompt or Command Prompt. If you don’t know where it is, search it on your computer or your files. It’s normally under “All programs” on start menu, right inside the “Accessories” folder.
• Now, start being techie and type “ping google.com”. You should get replies like the following:C:\Users\Admin>ping google.comPinging google.com [74.125.235.19] with 32 bytes of data:

  Reply from 74.125.235.19: bytes=32 time=86ms TTL=47
  Reply from 74.125.235.19: bytes=32 time=208ms TTL=47
  Reply from 74.125.235.19: bytes=32 time=353ms TTL=47
  Reply from 74.125.235.19: bytes=32 time=98ms TTL=47

  Ping statistics for 74.125.235.19:
  Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
  Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
  Minimum = 86ms, Maximum = 353ms, Average = 186ms

  This indicates there IS a connection to the internet. And the most possible problem would be your browser, a firewall, an antivirus blocking the internet, or a virus blocking the internet.

   

• If however, you don’t get a response from Google, it’s good to reboot your computer. After rebooting, if it still won’t work, panic or yell at the waiter so they can check it.
• If none of these solutions apply, proceed to the next step.

3. Talk to Starbucks’ supervisor (Or the network admin) and report the issue to him. We can’t handle everything.
